This year team riders, Emma Richardson and Georgie Winter represented the Rogue team at Nass in shepton mallet, bath west showground, the line up of the girls to skate was huge! It was off the chain!

What a weekend!! Let’s ignore the fact that the girls skate comp started almost 3 hours late (!!) which was very frustrating (we’ll have a seperate post on this soon!!) but not only were the number of entries to the UK leg of the World Cup Skate Series held at NASS Festival higher than ever before (24 girls), not only was the cash prize purse bigger than ever before ($1,600), not only was there a bigger mix of nationalities (7 different countries represented) but thequality of skating was truly at an all time high – as you will see soon from soon-to-be-released videos.

Before I share the results, I’d like to do a few quick but important thank you’s: to the Rubicon guys Greg and Geofffor all their hard work in making this comp happen and for helping with travel by putting on a minibus from London and for stumping up the huge cash pot and products, to Danni for her tireless help in the organisation of it all and for the cool poster design, to Ben Powell (Sidewalk Mag) and Marc Churchill (Vans, Creature, Independent, Bones, Gravity Ramps…) for rocking the mic’s as always but especially to all the girlswho competed (and waited for such a long time to do so) – you’re all legends.

Phenomenal event, an amazing atmopshere and great to see such alot of bonding between all the girls from different countries. At the end of the day these events are all about enjoying yourself and promoting and supporting the girls skate scene for both the veteran competitors and those girls doing it for the first time. Awesome to see it all in action. Lots of pictures and video and longer write-up to come soon I’m sure.

Last weekend Lucy Adams helped organise a girls miniramp jam as part of the Paddle Around The Pier festival, down in Hove. With a promise of sun, sand and sea, the day was set to be a corker. Although that was until we hit the M25…for those not in the know this is the motorway that circles London, and was aptly referred to as the ‘Road to Hell’ in a song by Chris Rea. Basically the road is just one long traffic jam! On a good day you can do the journey from London to Brighton in 1 hour and 30 minutes. However because the sun was out, every man and his dog apparently also wanted to make their way down to the south coast to dip their toes in the sea, so the journey ended up taking 3 hours!

By 2.50pm we were still not at the festival site and the comp was due to start at 3pm. Nerves were getting a little fraught, other riders has got lost and parking availability was abysmal. In the end doing what any other person would do – we gave up on trying to find that elusive free parking space, which admittedly was somewhere 5 miles out from the festival site anyway – got as close as we could (in this case across the road) and paid the extortionate ‘I could have bought a house for that’ parking fees.

By 3.05 Lucy had got all the riders together and the 45-minute ‘girls only’ jam began. Although the focus was to film Lucy’s for STS, there were other good tricks going down from the other riders present – namely Rogue riders Emma Richardson (ollie to crooked grind revert in, frontside 5.0 pop in) and Helen Lovelee (frontside 50.50 frontside lipslide and backside disaster). Lucy was all over the ramp landing a whole host of tricks – tweaked ollie fakies and fakie ollies, 50.50 fakie, boardslide fakie and smith grinds.

Part of the focus of the event was for Lucy to encourage younger riders to get involved. Two local young girls – Kiki and Tamsin – initially were a little nervous about riding the ramp especially with such a big crowd looking on.However after watching the older girls throwing down trick after trick they became more than keen to have a go.

With Lucy’s encouragement both learnt to drop on the 4-foot ramp and 6 foot extension.

10 Years of the Girl Skate Jam UK

The 10^th Anniversary, it’s a little hard to believe that all that time has passed since the very first Jam at Playstation Skate Park (now Bay Sixty6) in 2002. To mark the special occasion, a selection of photographs from the previous 9 events were put up on display. Michelle, Alan and baby Lennox Rushbrooke hosted the NIKITA BBQ, doing a marvelous job catering to all the differing dietary requirements (sourcing the meat from Lucy Adams’ Dad – nothing like keeping it in the skateboarding family!)

Although the advertised kick off time was 1pm, as happened in previous years, entrants started arriving from 11am. First through the doors was Italian rider Anita Almonte, AKA ‘powerhouse of the park’, she was followed by Bristolian rider Villa Kula, reigning champ Lucy Adams, Skatergirl writer Dani Gallacher, New Zealander Sophie Allen and a first from Japan – Ayumi Watanabe with many more then following. All members of the Rogue team managed to make an appearance including Emily Russell who’d flown down from Scotland early that morning – she deserved a medal just for the 4am start!

The Judging Beauties

The order of events followed the same pattern as previous years – a 2-hour jam for all, followed by Under 18’s, Over 18’s, Mini and Sponsored competitions. Under the guise of ‘10 years of celebrations’, riders were also invited to dress up for an extra two categories; 90’s girl skater and cross dresser.

N.W.A.’s Straight Outta Compton kicked off the Under 18’s comp. A classic on any DJ’s set list but it wasn’t until half way through the song that anyone realised the lyrics that were actually blaring out to those young innocent ears! Skate musical education – that’s what it’s called if any parent asks…

Caitlin takes on the rail

The youngest rider in the Under 18’s category was 11-year-old Rom local Ruby Easterling who did a good job of riding all the ramps in the park. Charlotte Thatcher did a nice ollie down the driveway. Claire Thompson, 14, impressed with her mad tech skills most notably a big spin and fakie big flip. Pioneer local ripper, 14 year old Caitlin Robinson Mawhood has progressed so much since last years comp – this time hitting up the big rail, transferring from quarter to quarter and clearing the driveway all at some speed. She also managed a pretty sweet face plant on the concrete but got straight up and continued with her run. The girl has balls of steel and is definitely one to watch in the future.

In the Over 18’s category, northerner Laura Johnson returned for her second year to compete pulling off a sweet backside 5050 shuv out on the block into the bank. Dani Gallacher nailed a front feeble 270 out, crook on the quarter and a flip down the Wembley. Anita Almonte basically went full pelt at everything, making the transfer from quarter to quarter, frontside ollie on the big quarter and a boardslide on the rail. Though it was Ayumi Watanabe who got the crowd going with her attempt at a boneless off the 7 foot ramp – even after slamming on each attempt she got up with a huge grin on her face every time.

After the heavy showers in the morning, the weather proceeded to get better and better and sunshine was in full swing by the time the miniramp comp began.

Minirampers

Helen Lovelee’s bag of tricks included a backside 5.0, long 5050’s and frontside lipslide. Emily Russell pulled off front and back tailslides, blunt to pivot and a back disaster to smith. Helena Long had a whole host of crazy drop-ins up her sleeve – some looking suspiciously similar to star jumps. She also got blunt fakie, back smiths and halfcab boardslides. Unfortunately work beckoned and Helena had to leave before the Sponsored section began.

20 minutes was then given to the oldies and suspect looking ladies with hairy legs. This was their chance to show off their costumes. It is sometimes incredible to think what skaters wore back in the 90’s and the fact it was the norm not to be able to see ones feet whilst skating, whilst ones trouser crotch swung around ones knees. Best Cross Dresser was awarded to Ewen ‘garters’ Bower and 90’s Girl Skater to Jenna ‘what were you thinking’ Selby.

Emily tames the ramp - Scottish style

The day was rounded off with the sponsored comp and yet again Lucy Adamsretained her crown as Queen of the Girl Skate Jam. Tricks included a switch boardslide and a halfcab boardslide on the rail, fakie flip on the steep bank and a backside 5.0 and bs tail on the block. Second went to Emma Richardson who has found her feet on her board again producing a solid run with tricks including a frontside 5.0 on the bloack, kickflip, back and front 180 up the Wembley and a backside smith revert on the big quarter. Georgina Winter was awarded third place after landing a kickflip and pop shuv tail grab up the gap.

NASS 2010 - What a corker!! Bath and West showground again hosted the annual spots festival and this year was probably the best girls comp they've seen to date.

In all 15 riders entered, fresh from her appearance at the Girl Skate Jam 2 weeks again Evelien Bouilliart made the trip over to the west of England. The other continental representative was Emma Lingden from Sweden. Furthest travelled were Kara Geatz-Bruce (Canada) and champion supreme Letícia Bufoni (Brazil), hot off her 2nd place at Mystic Cup last week.

This year organisers had manged to arrange the comp for the earlier time of 8pm, although the BMXing qualifiers over ran so it was closer to 9pm before things kicked off. The girls competed in in a jam format - split into 4 groups - with the top rider from each qualifying for the final.

Group A - Charlotte Thatcher, Fran Stroud, Georgina Matthews and Helena Long.
Group B - Dani Gallagher, Charlotte Brennon, Lucy Adams and Kara Geatz-Bruce.
Group C - Sophie Allen, Evelien Bouilliart, Ellie Ford and Emma Lindgren
Group D - Letícia Bufoni, Emma Richardson and Claire Jones

It was a no holds barred contest, Letícia and Evelien dominated the rail down the stairs with back smiths, lipslides and feebles been thrown down amongst other tricks. Ellie Ford landed a good fronside heel on the bank, Emma Lingden a frontsdie air out of the quatre, Helena an inward heel over the hip, Fran a double flip on the driveway and Emma a switch frontside 180 over the hip. Lucy started off fairly shakey and it looked doubtful whether she would reach the final or not. There had been one or two issues with the music which was sorted out halfway through her run. Obviously a few beats kicking in did the job for her and she landed a feeble on the flat rail and a fakie flip on the steep bank which helped see her go through to the final.

The others who qualified were Letícia Bufoni, Evelien Bouilliart and Helena Long. A fifth was awarded to Emma Lindgren for her performance in her run.

There then followed some confusion, the organisers of the event decided that everything was over and everyone had to leave the arena. After 15minutes of no one really knowing what was happening it was decided that the final could take place. So the 5 girls took to the floor once more for another 5 minutes.

What a final. Everyone pushed themselves but it was clear from the start that it was going to be dominated by Evelien and Leticia. Both were using different parts of the park, but the comp ended up on the rail down the stairs. By this point MC Ben Powell announced that the final would actually not be finishing and the girls had all the time they wanted to do as many tricks down the rail as they could. Leticia was ridiculous - front feeble followed by a back smith. The crowd was actually going seriously wild! She then nollied, switch ollied and kick flipped the stairs, just because...she can! Evelien also had a good run and was trying her hardest to blunt down the rail, on the majority of the tries she got to the bottom only to hit the floor at an awkward angle and fall off. She had tweaked her ankle in the qualifiers, that coupled with a very drunk night before meant that she was just too tired in the end.

All in all a great comp...next stop UKSA!

The 9th annual Girl Skate Jam went down on Saturday on the 19th June at Pioneer Skate Park in St. Albans. It was an amazing day, a great turn out of girls and some great riding to be seen. The weather was touch and go but the rain held off, much to everyone’s relief. Full write up HERE

Last few Days of filming

The last couple of days have seen Helena blitzing various spots around London. Friday started with filming at Victoria Park in Hackney - the place with the best slides in the world! From there it was to Wood Green with it's slightly bizarre half park set up, finishing up at Alley Palley with a couple of 5-0's.

Saturday, Lucy Adams joined the South London street spot tour. Although her and Jenna we're so busy nattering it took them 20 mins to realise they were going past Earl's Court (west London) but meant to be meeting Helena in Greenwich (south east London). The first spot, when they eventually got there, named the 'cheese' spot turned out to be a bust with a man coming out and asking Lucy what she would do if she hit a car with her board, her reply being "run very fast," to which he wasn't very amused! From there they headed to Deptford, Friendly Street to a great little plaza. Some really sick tricks went down until Lucy had a freak accident and her vain almost popped out of her leg. When Jenna tried to get ice from the shop across the road, the crazy man got out a knife and started chipping out blocks from his freezer, to which she assured him Sweetcorn would be just fine.

Sue Hazel submits Southsea and more

Sue Hazel has very kindly handed over the precious cine films of her skating for the forthcoming 'As If, And What' film.

Obviously not wanting some sort of hash up George Lucas style remastering job done on it, a brilliant firm in Three Bridges is going to transfer it over to digital. The footage which spans over 3 decades includes vert skating on the infamous Southsea Ramp.

On the 13th August, Georgi and Jenna were invited to do a slot on Live radio. Completely open to any music, the tunes spun by the "professional" djs included amongst others: Paramore, Enter Shitkari, The Cribs and of course MJ!!

They were there also to talk about the Rogue team but it all ended up with far too much giggling and incredibly bad Alan Patridge impersonations.

Croxley Skate Comp

Croxley Green Skate Park held it's third annual skate jam on Sat 22nd August. In recent months the park has been overrun with BMXers and it was decided to try and reclaim back the park for skaters,bladers and scooterers for the day.

Guys from LoveNskate and Rogue had been lined up to do a demo for the excited kids, although at the last minute some of the Rogue team pulled out due to skater time keeping. So Georgi represented for the team and she did it very well, even bagging herself 1st place in the girls comp...ok admittedly she was the only one to enter in the division but gave an impressive perormance of tricks including a kickflip transfer from quatre to flat bank.

With four Rogue decks and a bunch of Vans goodies prizes were a plenty. Well done Cat Baldwin for organising the comp, roll on next year

The Spinal Tap effect

We received a mail to say that the Pink Sessions - snowboard evenings for girls - were organising a minramp jam at the SnoZone.

Lucy, Dani, Jenna and Stef battled their way through 4 hour oil spialges, horrendous jams and paying twice for bus fares as an online booking facility hadn't worked! Mission!!

Anyone who has seen Spinal Tap will be able to appreciate the calamity that was to be. The day before the jam it was confirmed that the ramp would be a 5 footer...you can imagine the delight that was that on arrival the ramp turned out to be only 1 foot high!!..to top it off, it hadn't even been assembled!! 3 blokes were arguing over as to where to put the screws, which surely on a ramp of that extreme size shouldn't be difficult.

The OSS Jam was unfortunately hit by the beautiful British summer weather, in the not so good way! Torrential rain forced organiser Stef Nurding to abandon the comp.

However not all was lost, the pub round the corner offered free pool, Monopoly and student priced drinks. It also gave mini ramp wonder Danielle Mellor a chance to show off her juggling skills, which were of course caught on camera for As If and What?...well if we can't film skating juggling obviously comes in a close second!

The Jam will take place on the 6th of August at the Oxford Wheels project, as part of the Oxfordshire Skateboard Series. The contest times are as follows:

10-13:00 Registration and Practice
1-3 Jam sessions for Under 18s, Over 18s and Girls - This will comprise of 15-20 minute Jam sessions, with prizes for best trick and prize bags for the top 3 girls
3-4 Free Skate with prize chuck outs
4-5 Finals

There will be D.Js provided by ëFor Boarders by Boarders as well as artwork demos. Drinks will be provided by SUSO and there will be many other great prizes from our sponsors. Full write up out shortly, but here's a short brief ditto of the days happenings:

Girls from Czech, Poland, New Zealand, France, Ireland, Spain and the UK travelled to the Pioneer Skate park in St Albans on June 20th for the 8th annual Girl Skate Jam. More than 40 riders turned up to skate the comp and catch up with friends. Hats have to go off to the 6 girls who came over from Spain and camped in the green next to Pioneer for two nights and nearly got abducted by a taxi driver!! It was good to see new faces coming through on the UK scene especially with ramp ripper Charlotte Thatcher, a Romford local.

Thanks to all the sponsors: Nikita, Les Ettes, Vans, Eastpak, Death, LoveNskate, Pro Tech and Rogue for all their help.

In her own words..."The villa was ridiculous, pool and everything. Had lots of nice food, but i had wisdom teeth issues so was dosed up on painkillers all day. This years Girl Skate Jam will be on Saturday 20th June, between 1-6pm at Pioneer Skate Park, St Albans...20mins on the train from Kings Cross, London.

There will be ams and sponsored, mini and street comps, plus a 2 hour jam for those who don't want to compete but who want to come hang out anyway. The parks had a bit of a face lift since the last comp, check out the pics to see the new bitsNpieces, the new mini is amazing.

Girl Skate Jam UK date announced

This years UK Girl Skate Jam (the 9th one now!) will take place on Saturday 20th June from 12-5pm at Pioneer Skate Park in St Albans.

The park has had quite a face-lift over the last few months (see the pics) with quite a lot being added. Indoors, there's a new driveway with rail attached to the Koston, the old rails on the original driveway have been replaced and outside a new mini is being built next to the exisiting midi.

To celebrate their 10 year anniversary in 2010, Nikita will be producing and publishing a 200 page coffee table book to celebrate and portray the lifestyle of the Nikita girl; in photos, words, poems, graphics and art, or in any which way possible. The layout of the book will be in a scrapbook style, quite raw and graphic based.

"Along with stories, people and pictures from the depths of Nikita’s archives, Nikita would like to dedicate the rest of the content to all girls who ride. Grab the opportunity to tell your own story, what you love, what you do and what Nikita means to you. Any form of entry is acceptable – this will be a coffee table book to truly represent the Nikita girl, a book about her life and something hopefully all will want to be a part of".

Liverpool Ladies Day

Ladies Day at Rampworx. Things didn't didn't get off to the best start with the journey to Liverpool taking over 5 and a half hours, to the wrong destination and a slight panic that Jenna's laptop had been nicked. Things supposedly wouldn't be fun if they all ran smoothly?

The evening saw some of the UK's best riders including top blader Jenna Downing and England International footballer Sue Smith (Sadie was very excited!!) representing.

The idea was to hold an event where young girls could attend and feel comfortable to learn in an all female environment - although there seemed to be quite a large amount of guys still riding which was a little confusing. After a couple of media whore-esq interviews the team along with Lucy Adams did a demo for the onlooking hoards. Also at the park were vert ripper Rebecca Aimee Davies and Lois Pendlebury.

Later on that evening everyone headed over to Bumper Club in the city centre to watch a sneak preview of the forthcoming Rogue demo - out online this Friday - then danced til the wee early hours of 5am.

Winding up the filming with Giggsy

Filming is winding up for the Rogue promo, last day in Brum tomorrow. Today saw Jenna wing her way to the Manc-side to get some last bits of footage with Maria.

Great...you'd think? Until...obviously being the cool cats they are, as a Mr Ryan Giggs nonchelantly walked past and stopped on the corner where they were filming Jenna of course wouldn't think to stand there with her mouth wide open staring - catching at least 2000 flies in the process. Then trying to silently mouth to Maria "it's Ryan Giggs. Ryan Giggs!!", subltey pointing behind her other hand while he looked on very confused - Maria in reply "Roy Keene wow yeh we should get him on film"

This of course went down very well and he expressed an immediate desire to be in the Rogue film which we had to let him down gently on. In sad reality he dived into the Laungerie shop opposite as quickly as possible to get away from the somewhat crazy people. Maria and Jenna sat outside waiting for their opportunity to ask him to be on film. After 20mins in the cold Maria plucked up the courage to go into the shop with Jenna now shamefacedly in tow.

Of course someone up above was having a good laugh as the split second they walked in, out walked Giggsy looking somewaht suspect at the camera Maria had ready in her hand. The two then had to spend some time in the shop to make their story look authentic.

Sadly Mr Giggs will not be on the forthcoming promo, but a lot of bloody good skating will be!

It's time to dust off the french phrase books and pull out the mange tout...this years ROGUE tour will be hitting the shores of the french-side between Monday 27th July - Sunday 2nd August.

With special tour guide in the form of heel flip champ Claire Alleaume, looks set to be a good one. Nantes, Bordeaux and hardcore Duty Free shopping at Calais all on the agenda.

Georgi is the one apparently most looking forward to the ferry crossing!!

Riders heading for the far off shores are the usual ROGUEsters plus Emma Richardson, Sadie Hollins and Laura Crane.

Helena causes havoc

Whilst filming for the upcoming ROGUE promo, Helena scraped with the wrong side of the law after she apparently put a crack into a marble bench in Canary Wharf.

Security guards ahoy declared that she would have to fix the damage she had caused before they would let her go.

Eventually they agreed that there was a possibility that she couldn't have put the crack in the marble as she was not quite heavy enough to commit the crime in question. Thumbs up to the education system!

Thankfully all this was captured on ROGUE TV.
